American bully dogs have recently become popular and make some of the most loyal pets. They require proper care and nourishment. In this post, we’ll try to give you a short guide on taking care of an American Bully.

Origins of the American Bully Breed

As the name implies, the American bully comes from the  United States. A relatively newer breed, it is a cross between the American pitbull terrier and the American Staffordshire terrier, with a few other bulldog breeds mixed in.

Contrary to popular belief, the American bully is not a pure bulldog. The bully is significantly shorter than the pitbull. They have a larger head and a wider body as well.

Typical bully dogs are medium-sized, standing between 15 and 20 inches. Based on their weight, these well-built dogs can weigh between 30 and 60 pounds. Some breeds can go higher. They do not possess a lot of furs and have characteristically short legs.

American Bully Breed Types

The classification of American bullies is quite simple. They are divided into four different types based primarily on their size.

Standard

This is the most common bully breed. They have an average body size and are found all over the United States. Their maximum height can go up to 18 inches.

Classic

This breed is very similar to the standard breed. The only noticeable difference is they have lighter body frames, giving them a more ‘retro’ look. You need a keen eye to be able to tell them apart.

Pocket

The smallest of the bunch, this bully can only achieve a maximum height of 17 inches. Their legs are extremely short, making them truly pocket-sized.

XL

This particular breed is the largest of the four types. They can achieve a towering height of 23 inches and weigh well over 70 pounds.

Micro Bully

These dogs are even smaller than the pocket-sized ones. They are very rare and not an officially recognized breed.

Taking Care of Your American Bully

The American bully is a magnificent animal. They are loyal to a fault and have strong territorial instincts. Consequently, these muscular dogs require extra care and proper nutrition.

Food and Nutrition

Food is the most important aspect of your American bully’s well-being. You need to be careful when selecting dog food for American bully as it must contain at least 30 percent protein. A high protein diet is needed to maintain muscle mass.

Fat is also an important food group for the American bully. Your dog’s diet should contain about 20 percent fat. High-quality dog food tailored for bullies specifically is available at your local pet store. They are more expensive than your typical dog food, so be prepared to spend a little extra.

You should consult a veterinarian and measure out appropriate portion sizes for your bully. Just like humans, dogs have a body-mass index too. Maintaining a steady index is vital for your bull’s well-being. So an expert opinion will help you find the perfect diet plan.

Due to their high protein and fat-based diet, bullies can easily become overweight. Overweight dogs tend to be sluggish and lose their flair. If you feel your bully has gained a few pounds, consult your veterinarian and adjust your dog’s diet accordingly.

Water

Clean water is an absolute necessity when it comes to keeping your bully healthy. The water dish should be separate from the food bowl and must be refilled with each meal.

Bacteria and fungi can easily grow in the dish which poses a serious health risk for your dog. It is a good idea to clean the dish every day. A well-hydrated bully will be happier and more energetic.

Treats

You may be tempted to give your bully dog treats. While they are enjoyable for dogs to munch on, they are also incredibly unhealthy. These treats are chock full of chemical compounds like xylitol and sorbitol, which are not good for your dog.

Studies have shown dog treats can cause stomach problems and obesity. Long-term effects include poisoning and seizures. Once in a blue moon is okay, but avoid them as much as possible.

Natural Foods

Too much dog food is not a good thing. Imagine eating the same meal year after year. Eventually, you will get sick of it. Your bully is no different. At least once a week, provide your dog with raw meat or fish

Vegetables are full of important vitamins and minerals. Sweet potatoes, green beans, and carrots are really good for your bully. Fruits can be an excellent treat as well. Bananas provide iron, and oranges provide vitamin C, which is essential for your dog’s good health.

How Many Meals a Day?

Typical bullies need to be fed at least three times a day. Ideal times are 8 a.m., 2 p.m., and 8 p.m. Having a predetermined schedule will ensure your bully has a steady supply of nutrition. On top of that, your dog will be conditioned to eat during those times and be hungry.

It is important to note that bully puppies need an additional meal each day. They are growing dogs and need more to eat. You should consult with your veterinarian and plan a set schedule.

Cleanliness

Unlike cats, which are sticklers for cleanliness, dogs tend to get dirty. The American bully is no exception. The good news is they do not possess a lot of furs, so cleaning them is not a hassle.

It is recommended you wash your bully with shampoo at least once every month. There are special shampoos you can buy for dogs from the local pet store.

Dogs tend to roll around on the ground or graze their bodies against walls. Excessive rolling or grazing may be a sign of lice. Check your dog immediately if you suspect this.

You can buy skin oils to maintain clear skin and a shiny coat. These oils are infused with antiseptic agents to neutralize any germs and bacteria. It is easy to tell a clean dog from a dirty one, so don’t be shy about cleaning your bully.

Nails need to be clipped fairly regularly. This is more of a judgment call. If you feel your bully’s nails are getting too long, it is time to get those clippers out.

Exercise

American bullies have a stockier build since they come from a long line of working dogs. Due to their large muscle to weight ratio, these dogs require more exercise. Taking them out once every day to walk around the block is a good idea.

If you jog in the mornings, it is the perfect time to have your bully run alongside you. You may also take them to your local park and play fetch. Dogs love to interact with their owners in this way. Your bully will love you even more if you play with them regularly.

The Internet can also be a source for your Bully’s entertainment. Toys like automatic ball launchers have shown to be very stimulating for raising a smart dog.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are a key element of keeping your bully healthy for years to come. This is especially true in the case of puppies. They are more susceptible to diseases due to their underdeveloped immune systems.

Most vaccines are administered between 6 to 14 weeks. The common vaccinations include rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus. These diseases can be fatal for dogs and in some cases even humans. COVID-19 can affect bullies as well. The good news is there are vaccinations available for it.

It is important to note that vaccines do not take effect immediately after administration. Usually, it takes about a week for them to kick in. A hundred percent immunity takes about four months. Booster shots are required when applicable.

Veterinary Appointments

Having a dedicated veterinarian can work wonders for your bully. A vet will be able to do a lot more than simply check for ticks. They are experts on pet nutrition and can make a diet plan. As mentioned above, proper nutrition is the first step in taking care of your dog.

Veterinarians can also recommend and administer vaccinations. They will also schedule additional booster shots. Making regular appointments with a veterinarian can keep your bully healthy for its entire life.

Prices of an American Bully

The American bully can be an amazing and loyal friend. If you are looking to get a bully puppy, do not worry as they are easily available. The first step is to decide what size you want.

Local pet stores may not always have an American bully available. In that case, contacting a breeder is your best bet. There are some factors to keep in mind, though. For example, a good breeder will be certified by the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC).

They will possess vast knowledge about the bully breed and even let you meet the puppy’s parents. He/she will provide certification of a healthy dog. Good breeders will also offer to take your bully back in case there is a major problem.

Bully puppies are on the expensive side. They can cost you up to $6000, depending on the seller. Breeders will charge more as they have healthier puppies. You may also choose to adopt an adult bully.

Bullies make amazing pets. They are loyal to and fiercely protective of their owners. Taking good care of them is the best way to show your love in return.
