5 Tips For Choosing A Pet Snake

pet snake

When choosing a snake as a pet, you have to know that you are making a very long-term commitment. A lot of species can live to over 20 years. You also need to be willing to feed prey to your snake. Pre-killed prey is the best choice and often comes frozen in bags. Taking care of a snake as a pet cannot be compared to having a dog or a cat as a pet. If this is not a problem for you then you still need to know that there are some other requirements that you need to keep in mind.

Get A Healthy Snake

The first tip is that you have to make sure that you are getting a healthy snake. It’s vital that you look out for any signs of illness. This could include bubbles coming out of the nose, mouth rot, closed eyes or even retained skin. It’s helpful to ask for a feeding demonstration so you can make sure that your snake is taking to pre-killed prey well. Ball pythons are very notorious for having a range of feeding problems so keep that in mind.

Beginner Snakes

Some of the best pet snakes for beginners include ball pythons, corn snakes, king snakes or milk snakes. These snakes tend to be very well-sized and they are also very easy to care for as well. You can buy them from a huge range of breeders too. If you want some snakes to avoid then keep an eye out for Burmese pythons, water snakes, boa constrictors and green snakes. Any kind of snake that is dangerous to the owner should be avoided; the bite of a venomous snake and the crushing power of a constrictor can be deadly to humans.

Provide a Thermal Gradient

Every snake needs to be able to regulate their body temperature so that they can move between a warm or cool area. If you are able to provide this for your snake, then they will be much happier. You need to do this by ensuring that the warm side of the tank is hot enough for the snake to digest their meals. There are some common signs that your snake is about to shed as well, and temperature is vital to this.

Finding an Escaped Pet

If your snake tends to be an escape artist, then this information about finding a lost pet will help you. You need to know that your snake will likely head for a space that is warm and enclosed. They may also head to somewhere that is away from noise too.

Go to a Reputable Store When Choosing a Pet Snake

If you go to a reputable store, then they will be able to tell you if your snake is healthy and they can also let you know if there is anything that you can do to care for your snake better. This is of vital importance, so make sure that you keep this in mind if you can. If you are having a hard time finding a store near you then it is more than possible for you to get your snake delivered, but again, look up reviews and always ask the store if they can give you some advice as this will help them to demonstrate their knowledge.

What Sounds Do Cats Like? They Adore Classical Music

what music do cats like

What music do cats like? A moaning or wailing just above an empty cat bowl, those strange noises during oestrus or just meowing because of the owner’s insufficient attention?

Apparently, it turns out that cat music means one more thing: real music that your cat will adore from the first note. Research on what exactly music is for a cat is quite complicated because it requires a reliable sample of respondents. Meanwhile, as you probably know, every cat likes to walk its own paths and doesn’t like doing something of not their choice. Click here if you want to find out more about the most common cat habits. However, checking the effect of music on cats does not have to be difficult and can be successful even at home.

As it turns out, music has a beneficial effect not only on the human mood but also on the mood and behaviour of your cat. What matters is not the volume of the song being played, but above all – the music genre that you serve to your cat at the musical feast. Which songs and genres do cats like, and which sounds are real torture and may cause anxiety?

Music for the cat, or what?

One of the researchers at the University of Lisbon, Miguel Carreira conducted an unusual experiment on twelve cats. The experiment aimed to find the preferred music genre that has the best effect on the body and mood of the cats. Carreira, exposed cats to different kinds of music: from classical genre (“Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber) pop (“Torn” by Natalia Imbruglia) to heavy metal sounds (AC / DC “Thunderstruck”). During each song, the researcher closely watched and monitored the external and internal signs of behaviour and the overall mood of the cats. He paid attention to the heart rate and the cat’s body language: anxiety or relaxed posture.

What conclusions did he come to?

What sounds do cats like?

Relaxing music for a cat is the one closest to the classical genre. Only while listening to classical music cats showed a high degree of relaxation and composure. They were relaxed and their heart rate was a stable value. Which song was no good for them? It is probably not a big surprise that the most aggressive music: for example the song of the AC / DC band. It caused anxiety in the cats, accelerated the pulse and made their eyes wide. Meanwhile, Natalia Imbruglia’s pop song turned out to be completely indifferent to the ears and musical taste of the cats under the study.

What kind of classical tracks do cats enjoy?

This experiment highlighted several important issues that you can use every day to improve your pet’s well-being. First, cats, although they hear differently from people, also react to the sounds that surround us, including (but not limited to) music. So, if you have ignored your cat’s musical taste so far, it is worth changing your habits and from time to time offering something that will please them and relax them. They’re more likely to relax while listening to Bach, Handel or Mozart. You can treat it as an interesting reminder for yourself.

Why don’t you give it a try?

“Cat music” is not just Mozart – what else cats enjoy listening to?

Music for cats, to the contrary, is not only the most popular classical songs. Cat music is also a separate genre of “music” that was developed by scientists, intended for our furry friends. What are its sounds and why are they so pleasant to your pet? Charles Snowdon, Psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and music composer, David Teie from the University of Maryland have jointly developed a collection of sounds that act on cats just like your favourite piece of music works on you.

After numerous observations and tests, they came to the conclusion that due to the fact that cats hear completely different than human beings and due to the fact that their heartbeat is different -faster than the human heart rhythm – they needed to create music that is significantly different from the one we know. Music has to adapt to our current mood, the sharpness of senses and – the heartbeat.

As it turned out, it’s no different from the cats. Snowdon and Teie composed the most soothing sounds for cats and it’s called  “Cozmo’s Air“.

What notes does it consist of? Mainly the sounds that refer to the sound of a cat purring. The beat of this song is 1380 beats per minute.

Scientists have created another song, “Rusty’s Ballad”, which consists of sounds that mimic the sounds of kittens sucking mother’s milk, and its rhythm is 250 beats per minute. Snowdon and Teie decided to test their work to the audience of 47 cats of both sexes. They also exposed them to classical music by Bach and Faury. What was the effect? The cats were much calmer and relaxed with “Rusty’s Ballad”. Some of them brushed against the speaker, which clearly indicates it was soothing.

So…who picks the music at home?

What are the conclusions? Classical music is much more pleasant for cats than the sounds of metal, hip-hop or neutral pop. More harmonious and subdued sounds have a soothing effect not only on human nature but also on cats. However, real cat-music breaks popularity records among this genre.

The sounds of purring and sucking mother’s milk sound like a return to their true nature, the innate harmony, which turns out to be as important for cats as it is for humans. How music affects your pet? Cats may seem indifferent to the songs you listen to at home, but remember that despite the invisible reaction, they can hear and feel everything. If you are a fan of heavier sounds, remember that your cat prefers more subdued and natural sounds. Try to find a compromise, like these instrumental beats for example, and determine the time of day when you and your cat can both relax with your favourite music.

How To Get Rid Of Scorpions Permanently

how to get rid of scorpions

Some areas of the world are lucky enough not to have scorpions in their climate. But people in some regions face a serious problem of lizards and scorpions entering their houses or flats. This is not only unpleasant and inconvenient but also really dangerous, as some scorpion species are really poisonous. They are typical, for example, in the southern parts of the United States. What can you do about it in your house and how is it possible to get rid of scorpions permanently? Luckily, there are some ways to do so, and they mostly involve the use of various repellents. You can check out some possible solutions at the las vegas pest control.

How do scorpions get inside?

Scorpions normally live in deserts or other dry and sunny areas, usually not inhabited by humans. The pest control experts from EnviroGuard explain how they’re relatively small, so it’s not difficult for them to get into the housing areas, for example in the search for shelter or food. Especially in the colder months, when the temperatures get low, it’s probable that scorpions will be seeking shelter and warmth.  Once they get into a housing area, it’s enough to have an open door or even window to have a scorpion inside. These animals actually love to climb, so if there’s anything hanging from the windowsill, they’re likely to use it to get inside.

How to tell if you have scorpions in the house?

Well, the answer might be obvious – if you see a scorpion, it’s a straightforward indication of their presence. But some other signs include for example the presence of other smaller insects. If you suddenly see a lot of crickets and cockroaches around, you may be sure that the scorpions will come there as well. They ‘chase’ their food, so other insects may bring scorpions along with them.  Also, if you have citrus trees in your garden, you may expect scorpions to appear. They like wet and shady places, such as citrus trees or other bushes.

What to do if I see a Scorpion?

A face-to-face meeting with a scorpion might be a frightening vision, but in fact, if you follow some guidelines and tips, it doesn’t have to be that scary. First, don’t panic. Don’t try to catch or hit the scorpion, as it will become angry. You should rather open the doors and windows wide open to let it go away freely. If you need any professional help, you can always call the fire brigade or other services.

Tips on How to Get Rid of Scorpions

It may not be as easy to get rid of scorpions in your house forever. However, there are a few methods that can be helpful in this situation. Some general tips can be found, for example, on Wikihow. First, try to use a special insect repellent spray, that you can put on various surfaces when you expect to see scorpions, for example, walls, windowsills or floors. You can do it also on the exterior side of your house – remember about places like the basement or garage. Another idea is to put special pesticide dust on the floors outside and inside the house. You can also fill in any cracks with it. By doing it you will be able to prevent scorpions from entering your house. The range of repellents available on the market is huge – try to search for them for example here. If you don’t want to use any chemicals, though, you can think of using a natural repellent – cinnamon. It is thought to be extremely unpleasant to scorpions as well.

An equally good solution is to prepare special sticky traps for scorpions. They’re similar to those used for catching smaller insects, such as ants or spiders. Just set them out in the places where you expect to see the scorpions, for example in the yard, near the windows or doors or in any humid place in your house.

Last, and probably the easiest remedy for scorpions in the house is … buying a cat. Some cats hunt for scorpions, so it can be a natural and automatic repellent. The same goes for chickens, so if you have enough space and time to take care of them, you can try out this solution. If you don’t want to use any invasive methods, you can also consider changing the layout of your garden and, for example, cut out some trees that may be a tempting shelter for scorpions.

Scorpions can be dangerous, so their presence in the house should never be overlooked. Fortunately, the ways of getting rid of them are relatively easy. However, if the repellents or trap don’t seem to work, it’s best to consult a specialist who will assess the situation and suggest some further disinfection or application of strong repellents.

7 Myths About Dog and Cat Food

dog food

For all the people who have pets, buying dog or cat food is one of the most basic everyday needs. We all would like to choose good-quality and top-brand products for our pupils to give them energy and all the necessary vitamins and elements. However, there are many myths about this kind of food and they may be really misleading. In this article we will present the seven most important myths about dog and cat food that you should keep in mind when choosing the best products for your pet.

1. Dog and Cat Food is all the same

Dog food myths are numerous, but the most popular one probably concerns its lack of variety. Well, in comparison with human food, the dog and cat food may not seem dramatically varied. But this doesn’t mean, though, that it must be all the same. There are a lot of variations and alternatives available, depending on your pet age, preferences, and even health issues. For example, you can buy special low-fat or low-sugar products, food for pets with diabetes, for puppies or kittens, and for adult dogs and cats. You can even choose products that have the microelements which improve the pets’ physical ability or will eliminate parasites. The choice is almost endless nowadays.

2. This Food is Tasteless

Despite the fact that dog and cat food isn’t designed to be eaten by humans, a lot of people say that it’s … simply tasteless. Maybe it refers to the look and structure of the products, which isn’t really attractive indeed. But it’s definitely not tasteless. There are many types of pet food that are flavored, for example, with various kinds of meat such as pork, beef, chicken, or even with fish. There’s no need to worry that our pet will eat something totally tasteless. The ingredients and condiments are well-adjusted to the pupils’ taste (not necessarily ours!).

3. It’s Too Expensive

Another myth concerns the prices of pet food – it’s still said to be expensive and you might question yourself: how expensive is it to own a cat or a dog?

Apparently, it’s the same as in the case of any other products – there are many types and brands of dog and pet food, so everyone can choose between many kinds – from the cheapest to the top-quality brand products. It all depends on the customer’s choice then. It’s possible to find relatively cheap products that will conform to your pet’s taste.

4. Pet Food is Unhealthy

It can often be heard that pet food is neither tasty nor healthy. Many people think it’s full of preservatives and other chemical substances that make the products long-lasting and prevent the meat ingredients from rotting. However, nowadays the pet food is designed and created in such a way that it contains all the necessary ingredients and microelements for every pet to grow, and it contains only the minimum of artificial additives. Nevertheless, it’s always reasonable to check the ingredients before buying a product and make sure that it’s relatively preservatives-free. To have a look at the most common additives and preservatives in dog food, visit this page.

5. It’s Fattening

People think that the main reason for a pet’s obesity is the fattening artificial food that they eat. It’s not always true, though. Of course, if a cat and dog eat two kilograms of the food at once, there’s surely something wrong. But although the pet’s diet should always be diversified, in most cases the ready-made food is enough to provide the pet with all the necessary diet ingredients. It should not be fattening itself, so if your dog or cat is gaining weight with no apparent reason, try to take the vet’s advice. It’s not natural for a pet to get obese just because of the food they eat.

6. The Food is Poor-Quality

It’s a common myth that while ‘human’ food needs to be excellent-quality and conform to certain health standards, the pet food can be poor-quality and made from rotten or cheap ingredients. Well, it all depends on a producer finally, but it is definitely not a rule. Pet food tends to be better and better in both quality and taste – that’s also why the prices are often exorbitant. Of course, there are products that are not so healthy and tasty, but they are still an alternative for pet owners who can’t really afford any top-quality items. Still, if you are not sure of the quality of the food you chose, you can always contact the producer to get more information. You can also find a comparison of different brands for example here.

7. It’s Not as Good as ‘Natural’ Food

Certainly, there are people who cook especially for their pets every day, just because they love it, but the majority of people may do so only for their pet’s health and well-being purposes. In fact, however, there is no research that may show that the ‘normal’ food is healthier than the products for pets that can be bought in shops. It’s good to diversify the dog’s or cat’s diet and give them some homemade food such as meat or fish, but it’s no mistake to feed it with the ready-made products. It shouldn’t have negative effects on pupils’ health.

As shown above, there are still a lot of myths concerning the dog’s and cat’s food. However, it’s always good to stay reasonable and combine ready-made products with home-made food. This combination is safe and will make your pet happy. Remember that in case of any doubts, a vet is always a knowledgeable person to help and give advice in terms of the pet’s diet and nutrition.

Causes Of Joint Pains In Dogs – Could CBD Be The Cure?

joint pains in dogs

Have you noticed that your furry friend is having a hard time walking? Is it, additionally, becoming irritable for no apparent reason and there is a noticeable loss in appetite? Are its energy levels so not what you have been used to and you can’t figure out why it is sleeping all the time? If you answered yes to most of these questions, then it is time to get to the bottom of behavior like this and you’re your little friend. Visit this page to see what I mean.

Nobody likes to hear this, but I believe that your dog might be in pain. I’m talking about joint pain specifically since all of the above symptoms indicate that. If you thought that this animal will show it is in pain by whining and yelping, then you were very wrong. Canines are strong beings and they tend to go through this all on their own.

Unlike humans, they cannot express themselves with words. Even if they could, I suppose they would be those types that keep quiet about their ailments until it is too late. It is your responsibility to not let it be too late, which means that you will have to observe for signs of illnesses in your canine.

When you notice signs of joint pain, don’t jump to conclusions about what is causing it. Instead, do your research and find out the real reason. Better yet, contact your vet immediately and schedule an appointment. In any case, let me quickly tell you what could be the cause of problems with your dog’s joints.

First, here’s an interesting article to help you notice when your pup is having these issues: https://www.wikihow.com/Tell-if-a-Dog-Is-in-Pain

Causes

People usually assume that the cause of this pain is arthritis. Don’t get me wrong, it very well might be, but it doesn’t automatically mean that it is. Even when it is arthritis, there are different types of this disease, and some of them are more common than the others.

Rheumatoid arthritis, for example, is not the most common disease that affects our pups, even though it is so often mentioned in connection with joint pain. This ailment puts the canine in a constant state of inflammation, stiffness, and swelling. The worst part is, there is no known cure for the disease, although there are some products that can help and we’ll get to that shortly.

There is also something called immune-mediated polyarthritis, and it appears to be more common than the first type. Once again, it manifests in painful and swollen joints and you’ll notice it if your dog develops a limp or simply has a hard time walking. You can catch it in its early stages by touching their joints and checking if they are unusually warm.

The leaky gut syndrome affects most dogs too and it is closely connected to joint pain. Simply put, this is when toxins attack the gut and, once they have damaged it, they end up pouring into the bloodstream. Joint inflammation could be the first signs of this disease, but it can attack other organs as well in a later stage.

Cure

As I have already mentioned, there is no known cure for these types of diseases. Here’s some good news, though. There are products such as the ones found at Holistapet official page known to be able to alleviate pain and inflammation. This might sound unusual, but those products have a lot to do with cannabis.

Even though they are closely linked to cannabis, they are not psychoactive at all. They are made from a compound called CBD which is found in the hemp plant. Research has shown that these products have anti-inflammatory properties, which can really help treat inflammation.

In addition to that, they are known as powerful antioxidants, which will be of help with the leaky gut syndrome. Their ability to manage pain will help your dog get on its paws again and regain the energy that it once had. In other words, your pup will be much healthier and happier and you might see all the pain go away with the help of CBD for dogs.

Reviewing Petlab’s Itch Shampoo for Dogs

shampoo for dogs

Dogs are prone to itching skin caused by a variety of irritants. It can seem like a struggle to keep them clean and itch-free, especially for dogs who are prone to hotspots or allergies. Many shampoos and treatments are dependent on strong chemicals that make users hesitate to put on their pets.

PetLab has an itch relief shampoo for dogs that shows some promise in relieving itching skin without harsh chemicals. The shampoo offered by PetLab uses hydrocortisone and lidocaine to control the itching associated with allergies, ticks, and fleas, or other environmental irritants.

Ingredients matter

Pets gnaw at their skin, and frequently lick themselves, especially after a bath. Many anti-itch products list ingredients that could be dangerous to your pet if ingested. Some ingredients can cause further allergic reactions and are known irritants for human skin as well. Given how much contact time we spend petting our dogs, consumers want a product that is safe for themselves, children, and dogs.

The primary ingredients in PetLab’s Anti-Itch Shampoo:

  • Lidocaine—provides topical relief from hotspots, poison ivy, and flea and tick bites. Lidocaine is a common ingredient in over the counter anti-itch medications and sunburn relief for humans.
  • Hydrocortisone—An anti-inflammatory agent that helps inflamed skin to heal. Hydrocortisone is also frequently used in over the counter medications for humans. Medicines that are proven safe for humans give a sense of security that you will not harm yourself or your family with something you use on your pet.
  • Aloe Vera—a plant-based ingredient that people have used for centuries to calm and cool inflamed skin.
  • Collodial Oatmeal—oatmeal serves as a natural moisturizer that helps boost the overall health of a dog’s coat.

There are other ingredients in PetLab’s shampoo, but none are dangerous to dogs or humans in the amounts contained in the bottle. It is comforting to know that you can bathe your dog without risking contact with chemicals that could be harmful to you or your family.

See Your Veterinarian

If your dog has recently developed inflamed skin, hotspots, sores, or seems uncomfortable, you should see your veterinarian for a work-up. There are numerous causes for skin irritation in dogs, and your veterinarian is qualified to help determine the cause of a new problem.

A veterinarian will examine the skin and may order blood work to check your dog’s hormone levels and to ensure there is no infection present. Itchy skin is a common problem for dogs, but you want to make sure it is not a symptom of something more serious.

If your dog has an open sore on their body, you should inspect it daily for warmth, discharge, color, and smell. If the area becomes warm, has a smelly discharge, or any other signs of infection, call your veterinarian right away. Infections can be dangerous and should always be treated by a professional.

If your dog has previously been diagnosed with hotspots, allergies, or other skin irritation and the latest symptoms mimic the previous symptoms, then it is safe to try PetLab’s Anti-Itch Shampoo.

Does it work?

PetLab offers a 90-day money-back guarantee if any of their products are not satisfactory. The guarantee confirms that PetLab has full confidence in its products. Veterinarians recommend the active ingredients in PetLab anti-itch shampoo for the treatment and prevention of hotspots, itchiness, and irritated or inflamed skin.

Depending on the breed, some dogs are more prone to certain skin conditions. If you have a pet who has allergies or a skin condition, you know the struggle of finding safe products that work to make your dog more comfortable. Most treatments for hotspots, for example, are made to be applied topically to the affected area. It might provide temporary relief, but the spots will continue to reappear. With PetLab’s anti-itch shampoo, you are taking care of your dog’s entire coat instead of a spot treatment.

Some chemicals that are effective in treating a skin condition can cause overall dryness and dullness in the coat. With a shampoo that treats the skin condition and takes care of your dog’s skin and coat, you save time, money and you can keep your dog looking their bests.

The best way to keep inflammation from reappearing is to ensure that your dog’s coat and skin stay healthy. Make sure to feed them a nutritiously balanced diet and provide plenty of clean water. Many causes of itching or a dull coat are related to the quality of the food your dog eats. Finding the right diet, as well as the right shampoo, will help keep your pet healthy and comfortable.

Unique Uses of CBD Oil for Pets

CBD oil for pets

Dogs are considered as man’s best friend, and for good reason. They have been the constant companion of humanity even before society has begun. Guarding homes and giving assistance to hunters are just some of their main duties. As these needs diminished over time, people started looking at these animals as members of the family. In this post we’ll be discussing ways of helping our animal friends in their tough days, including the uses of CBD oil for pets.

They have not eliminated their pack mentality, but they have chosen humans to become their pack. This is why most dogs are friendly towards people, and they would be loyal until the end as this article tells us.

However, dogs can also get sick as any animals do. With their proximity with humans though, then need to be treated as soon as possible. Even though there is little to no chance that they will transfer it to humans, it can be painful to see them suffer. Some health issues are just simple ones like a cold or an allergy. On the other hand, there are cases wherein it can be serious like an injury or a terminal illness. It can be devastating for the animal, but most especially to the owner.

Take Care and Control

If ever your dog experiences anything, then you need to bring him to the vet as soon as possible. They can locate what’s wrong with your dog, and give you a potential cure for it. Unfortunately, it can cost you some money but it is so worth it. You can guarantee your pet’s safety and security as well as you will get your money’s worth. It can be difficult to see whether it will all be okay in the future, but your beloved canine is safe for now. There are a lot of ways that you can keep them safe.

Meanwhile, you can always explore other options for your pet’s health. One of the most popular ones these days are made from cannabidiol. Yes, that is the same substance found in cannabis. You may have heard of the craze regarding its use here in the US. Check internetvibes to know its benefits for dogs.

Some states have been legalizing it for its medical use. However, most countries all over the world still consider it as an illegal substance. On the other hand, there are some advantages to using it, especially with your furry friends.  Visit websites like the PetCBD Community site for more information regarding this.

Why Would You Use CBD Oil for Pets?

CBD oil for dogs1. Calming

Most dogs may have some temper problems. This is normal, as most of them cannot just shake away their wild side. After all, they are descendants of the wolves and they are known to be temperamental creatures. However, there are many cases wherein it can be a bit too far. Some would attack their owners in their confusion and fear. Others would hide and cower even though they are already in a safe place. CBD oil for pets can help them calm down and will help them sleep as well. For more info about CBD and its health benefits, check out CFAH, a resource for accessible, trustworthy, and up-to-date health information.

2. Pain Reliever

Another great thing about using them is being a pain-killer for animals. There is so much evidence of its effectiveness in humans. However, there is still room for more research in this field. Meanwhile, some pet owners swear on its effectiveness because of its calming properties. Some claim it can also help dogs with joint pains.

As animals do tend to act rationally due to pain, CBD can be a great thing to help adjust to their situation. It can assist them through their discomfort so that you will not be bothered as well. Learn more about how to manage it here on this post: How to Tell If a Dog Is in Pain and What You Can Do to Help.

3. Anti-Cancer Properties

Lastly, many researchers are studying CBD’s possibility as an anti-cancer drug. It might not be a well-known fact, but dogs can also suffer from cancer. Usually, these would affect their bones and eyes. It can be dangerous, especially once it reaches the later ages and old age becomes a factor as well. Surgery would be the only answer, but using CBD oild for pets can give you a chance to prevent it. It might take a little time, but you can always be a part of your daily routine.

There is a lot of room regarding the use of cannabidiol in medicine. Some experts might consider its use as dangerous, but many are taking the chance. However, you also need to be careful. There are some strains of CBD that might be pet-friendly but others are toxic. It can be fatal in large doses, so you need to know the right dose. CBD might be the new trendy drug, but that does not mean that it would work the same way as everybody else.

HOW TO IDENTIFY A SNAKE BY THE SKIN IT SHEDS?

how to identify a snake by its skin

Snakes amaze people; they are elegant minimalists. Their entire body is streamlined and purposeful, meaning that there is nothing in abundance.  Inside the body, the snake’s lung has only one flap, and the heart has only one chamber. Working from within the skin, flexible ribs act like small arms and legs; that’s the thing that distinguishes them from different reptiles and their amphibian ancestors.

Snakes are noteworthy because they can move without legs. By muscular and undulation movements, their specialized belly scales go up on trees, rock fences, cliff ledges, and barn walls. Snakes sense vibrations through the earth, taking note of danger. For more snake facts check this post.

The snakes release their outer skin during the shedding process called ecdysis. The animal that has such a simple way to deal with life also takes care of its life by just one significant move: shedding its external skin. This assists the snakes to grow and to get rid of parasites, similar to a dirty old sock. You’ve probably come across dried natural design wonders, like wasps’ nuts or mantis cocoons, when outside hiking or cleaning your garden.

shedded skin of a snake
Dried natural design wonders…

Different factors such as age, type of snake, health, etc. determine how many times a snake sheds its skin in a year. Sheds are typically dried and delicate when found. Snakes generally don’t shed in a place where they spend most of their time. They need something to rub against their body, which helps them in shedding their skin.

Identifying Snake Sheds:

Herpetologists generally have a great knowledge of reptiles and amphibians. They are able to identify snakes from their sheds. The shed skin of a snake is essentially larger than the one it carried because the skin has to be stretched to be pulled off from the snake. Both the length and width of the shed can give clues to the snake’s body shape and size. The skin tissues get relaxed and stretched. The intestinal area between the scales permits intricate folds when it’s time to let go. If you want to identify a snake by its sheds, turning the fragile skin to the right side is the delicate option.

It can easily breakdown by wind or animals or tear itself as a result of drying out. In case it is torn or distorted, it needs to be carefully photographed at each step of inversion.  You should have the ability to count scales and gain proficiency in learning their names to identify the species.

If the skin has been exposed to certain elements for some time, color patterns on a shed can be difficult to see. The shape or state of the head is a more easily recognizable difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes. If you can make a little pit between the eye and nostril if the head is intact and arrow-shaped, then you are probably going to have a venomous snake. The Coral snake is a special case in North America.

Here, I have explained some ways for a snake’s identification by its sheds. By looking closely at the scales, we can determine whether they are keeled or smooth. Smooth scales don’t possess any ridges, while keeled scales have a small ridge that passes through the middle.

By looking closely at the scales, we can determine whether they are keeled or smooth.

By examining the close-up view of the scales, you can see that they are smooth. We can identify several species, including the Northern Water Snake and the Garter Snake. As it has weekly-keeled scales, we can rule out Black Rat Snake

To distinguish it from the remaining snakes, we need to look at the anal plate. This can either be single or paired. It is located at the end of the belly scale on the body of the snake. It can be seen in the below photo that is shown in the circle. The snake tail is at the left and head on the right of the anal plate.

In the photo above, the anal plate on the skin is not divided but it is single. Racer snakes have anal plates that are usually divided, but single anal plates are present in Eastern Milk Snake. Therefore, it is an Eastern Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum).

Can you identify a snake by yourself?

The design of scale gives significant clues to most of the experts, and they pay more attention to the head. Professionals also find out other hints to identify snakes such as their diameter, scales on the body, and the length of the shed skin. But, unfortunately, shed skin generally doesn’t have any color and it’s very challenging to identify the exact snake, specifically when there are two similar species.

It’s possible to distinguish a snake by yourself with some patience, but it will be challenging. However, you need to have an intensive guide to handle snakes. If you want to do it by yourself, start by focusing on the length of the shed. Generally, the shed skin will appear longer than the actual size of the snake, but you can check potential snake species based on the length in your list.

At the next point, investigate the size of the shed skin. This will be your initial step towards observing whether the snake is dangerous. In various areas of the United States, non-venomous snakes are commonly thin and long, while venomous ones are thick and short.

Unfortunately, this standard is not valid in every case, so it is necessary to look at other factors to identify a snake. Now you need to look at keeled scales and smooth scales. Keeled scales generally have a ridge that runs along the center, and it can help you in identification. Then try to find out related patterns on the skin.  After considering all these factors, if you are still having trouble identifying your snake, check out snake-removal.com and email them a picture of your snakeskin, and they will reply with an answer, how cool!

4 Crucial Things You Should Teach Your Puppy

teach your puppy

A lot of pet owners hastily pounce on purchasing puppies because they are cute and lovable. Once an owner arrives home with their new pup, they are often at a loss for how to care for it. This is especially true for first-time pet owners.

While providing food and affection is a great start, you should also assume the role of a trainer. This way, your pup will be able to adapt to his environment and thrive in his new setting. Training your puppy will also encourage mental stimulation, allowing your pets to grow healthy and happy. Check out these four crucial things you should teach your puppy.

1) How to Socialize with Other Dogs, Animals, & People

Socializing your dog means exposing him to different:

  • Dogs
  • Animals
  • People
  • Sounds
  • Surfaces
  • Sights

By doing so, you will teach him that the world is a safe place that he can feel free to explore. If you don’t socialize him, you risk him becoming fearful and reluctant to accompany you on your adventures. Over time, isolating your puppy from the world can even become the reason why you will start to notice aggressive puppy warning signs.

When exposing your puppy to dogs, animals, people, sounds, and surfaces, start with controlled environments like a puppy class or small social gathering. You can even take your pup to a pet-friendly store during non-busy hours.

Avoid immediately exposing your puppy to loud and new environments as this will only result in stress and anxiety. Abruptly doing all of these can even become the reason why your puppy will be scared to socialize with other people, animals, and new environments in the long run. If, at any point, your dog seems nervous, remove him from the situation and allow him to watch from a distance.

Some dogs are naturally more social than others. For example, Dogtime reports that breeds like Goldendoodles, Maltipoos, and Basset Hounds get along great with other dogs. If your pup isn’t a typically friendly breed, recognize that it might take some time for him to warm up to individual animals, people, and environments. If your dog is naturally shy, start slow, and gradually progress moving forward.

2) How to Be Apart from You

As much as you already love your new pup, you can’t spend every second of every day with him. You likely have other obligations that keep you away from home for at least a few hours at a time. Often, you have to work for at least eight hours every day to work and then spend more time outdoors to run errands. The more hectic your lifestyle is, the more time you will have to leave your puppy alone at home.

If you don’t teach your pup how to be apart from you, he may develop separation or isolation anxiety behaviors. When left untreated, this can make your puppy aggressive.

Introduce him to the idea of “aloneness” gradually. Play with your dog or take him outside to tire him out before you begin this kind of training. Then, place him in his pen or crate with something to chew. Sit nearby and focus on a task like reading or watching TV.

Aside from these, you can also leave some toys with your pets to keep them entertained while you’re away. Toys are very beneficial for your dog’s growth and development as these can stimulate their brains and wear them out.

Over several weeks, repeat this process and slowly increase your distance from him and the amount of time you leave him alone. Eventually, he will be able to spend time on his own without feeling anxious.

3) How to Walk on a Leash

Training a puppy to walk on a leash may seem like more work than it’s worth. Puppies are often hyperactive and eager to explore the world, so it can be challenging to make them walk in a disciplined manner. If this is your first time to get a puppy, expect that your puppy will be full of energy and would want to play as often as possible. You might even see yourself gasping for air whenever you take your puppy out for a walk!

When teaching your dog to walk on a leash, you should focus on having him:

  • Not pull
  • Stay on one side of you (the left side is traditional)
  • Avoid weaving in between your legs

While it will take some time, you should be able to train your dog to walk on a leash. Keep initial walking sessions short, take treats with you as rewards, and use a short leash. If needed, you can invest in a pinch or prong collar to correct disobedient pulling.

4) How to Tolerate Car Rides

As a final tip, you should teach your new dog how to tolerate car rides. This way, you can easily take him with you to the vet and on your adventures.

If your pup got carsick the first time in a car, he likely has negative associations with it. To fix this, sit with him in a parked vehicle without driving. This way, he can get comfortable, and you can reduce the likelihood of car sickness in the future.

From there, take him on short car rides. Stay with your pup in the back while someone else drives. If your puppy gets anxious during car rides, consider bringing something familiar to them. This can be their favorite toy or blanket. These items will make your puppy easily adjust to car rides and remain comfortable while being inside the car.

After a few times of doing this, your puppy should be able to be on his own in the back seat.

In Conclusion

Take advantage of the first few weeks you’re with your new dog to teach him these four essential skills!

For instance, Delaware laws require permits for hybrids and wild animals, and possessing non-native poisonous snakes is illegal. Kansas laws consider snakes as dangerous animals and are not allowed to be kept as pets unless they’re in an approved facility, like a zoo or sanctuary. Permits are required for large constricting snakes and venomous snakes in Louisiana.

  • Killing Snakes: The Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 protect threatened and endangered snakes. Most states regulate designate snakes as non-game animals, snake hunting, and impose strict snake bag limits. It has a glue board to immobilize snakes (venomous and non-venomous) and keep them trapped inside the box. Scent triggers are also placed inside the box to attract snakes.
  • Tube Snake Trap: It’s the box snake trap’s tube version with an adhesive applied inside to trap and immobilize the snake. It has a perpendicular design so the snake can enter either one of the three ends with a size and shape that create a suitable snake habitat while waiting for their prey.

3. Effectively Prevent Snakes

If you don’t have any background knowledge about snakes, killing one will just make things worse. One thing you have to understand is that snakes, like rattlesnakes, take over a place and make it their habitat until they lack resources. That’s why killing one snake won’t cause the others to back out, but modifying their habitat will do the trick.

You can effectively prevent and get rid of snakes from coming back and forth your property using humane snake removal service. It’s given that you should trim foliage, remove weeds, mow grass, and remove debris, like tree branches, firewood, rock piles, bricks, and woodpiles from the ground to avoid snakes from residing your property.

  • Install Snake Fencing Barriers: The best snake physical barrier is a fence. It prevents unwanted snakes from entering your property, which will also avoid snake bites. Some of the materials used in building this fence include the galvanized mesh, concrete anchors, stakes, and screws.

The snake fence should be at least 36 inches tall. In this way, it prevents large snakes from entering and keeping their babies out.

To become a wildlife controller, a snake removal service should have a secured facility for housing captured venomous snakes, hold a valid first aid certificate, training certification for handling and capturing venomous snakes, and security arrangements for transportation of venomous snakes.
  • Responsibility: Wildlife controllers remove and capture venomous snakes when they become a threat to public safety. Also, wildlife controllers can remove other non-venomous snakes and reptiles that cause public concern.

5. Snakes Are Important

Maintaining biodiversity is crucial for all living things, including humans. Snakes play a vital role in keeping environmental balance.

It’s important to hire a snake removal professional for humane snake catching because killing snakes would disrupt the natural order of things. When snakes decrease in number, the animals they usually prey on multiply.

Here are the important benefits of snakes in maintaining biodiversity:

  • Pest Control: The best natural pest control are snakes, and they play an integral role in reducing pests, including mice and rats that destroy crops and carry disease.

Many homeowners remove or kill harmless Brown Snakes and Carpet Pythons only to learn that they’ve gotten rid of their home’s best rat trap.

  • Venom as Medicine: Snakes have venom that kills and also saves lives. Scientists study the medicinal properties of snake venoms. Certain snake venom show to have anti-tumor properties, antibacterial properties, and pain-relieving properties.

While hemotoxins that are present in snake venom target the body’s circulatory system, scientists use hemotoxins to produce medicines for treating blood disorders, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, brain injuries, and heart attack.

Snake Safety Tips: What to Do If You Encounter a Snake

Do you know what to do when you encounter a snake? Snake removal services are no stranger to snakes and most of the snakes that are seen in residential and commercial areas are not venomous. That’s why you need to have a game plan so you’ll ready if you encounter a snake.

Here are some snake safety tips when you encounter a snake:

  • Stay Calm: The snake likely saw you before you saw it. The snake will release a warning sound or lay still if it has not retreated.
  • Move Away: If you encounter a snake, you shouldn’t freeze in terror. Instead, move away from the snake. Never move closer, attempt to pick it, poke with a stick, or touch it.

Snake experts highly recommend retreating from a safe distance away from the snake but keep your eye on the snake. It’s a good idea to use your smartphone’s camera to get a quick shot picture of the snake to help the local snake removal company to identify the species of the snake. The Gray Ratsnake (Black Ratsnake) and rattlesnakes are commonly confused snakes, in which Gray Ratsnakes shake their tail to mimic the rattlesnakes’ warning sound they usually make.

  • Know the Difference: It’s important to determine if the snake is venomous or non-venomous. The easiest method to tell is to look at the snake’s eyes using your smartphone’s camera zoom.

Venomous snakes have elliptical pupils while non-venomous snakes have round pupils, with the exemption of coral snakes that are venomous but with round pupils. The other telltale signs of a poisonous snake include fatter bodies with a triangular-shaped and wide head.

Tips to Keep Away Snakes From Entering Your Property

If you reside in a place where snakes are frequently seen, chances are, you’ve walked out into your backyard and found a snake at some point. It’s a fact that many people have a fear of snakes, and finding a snake in your backyard can freak you out. So, how do you keep snakes away from your property?

Here are some tips and tricks to keep snakes away from your home or commercial establishment:

  • Contact a Snake Removal Service: Make sure to contact a snake removal service if you saw a snake in your property. If it’s a garden snake or non-poisonous snake, you can easily drive it away by reaching for a water hose. Spray it until the snake slithers away.
  • Make a DIY Snake Repellent: You can keep snakes away from your yard with ammonia because snakes hate the scent and deter it from entering your house.

You can soak rags or unused cloth in ammonia. Place inside unsealed plastic bags and leave the plastic bags on areas you usually see the snakes so they won’t return.

  • Keep Snakes Away from the Pool: Pour vinegar around the pool’s perimeter to keep snakes and other pests. The skin of the snakes absorbs liquids and will not slither over the vinegar.
  • Show Human Presence: As much as you hate snakes, they also don’t want to live with humans. So, one way to keep snakes away is to show human presence.

Save your cut hair from your comb and sprinkle it in your property, like in your yard. Snakes will smell your hair and move away.

  • Take Advantage of A Snake’s Strong Sense of Smell: Snakes rely on their unique sense of smell because of their “Jacobson’s organ.” It makes them sensitive to the scent of cinnamon, clove essential oils, and other strong odors.
  • Inspect Your Home: Pay special attention under doors and check for any gaps. Seal visible holes by using weather stripping. It’ll prevent the escape of cool air. Make sure that there are no cracks in your house’s foundation. If there are cracks, seal it immediately.
